Digital Cinema Updates @- From Hollywood, UK and India -


The DCI Specification will enable the launch of digital cinema over the globe. This Symposium focuses on the current state of digital cinema and the rollout plans over the next few years. We also examine what advantages digital cinema will bring to the creators and to studios, production and post-production companies, distributors, and exhibitors.

Filmmakers attending the SKIP CITY INTERNATIONAL D-Cinema FESTIVAL 2005 are especially encouraged to attend.

Mark Kimball (Director, Digital Production, Walt Disney Company, U.S.A) Kimball started his career working on computerized motion picture special effects for the movie Tron, and has worked on film production tools and technology for over twenty years. He has been a key architect for numerous technical projects for Walt Disney including CAPS (Computer Animation Production System) for which he received an Academy Award in 1992 for Scientific and Engineering Achievement. For the last two years he has been involved in the work of the Digital Cinema Initiatives consortium of seven major Hollywood studios. Kimball currently works as Director of Digital Production for The Walt Disney Company.

Dr. Sunil Patil (CEO, PVR Digital, India)
Sunil Patel is the CEO of PVR Digital, which plans to set up 200 digital screens in India in the next few years. Currently he also looks after the operations of PVR Cinemas in South and West India. PVR is the largest multiplex operator in India. Dr. Patil formerly worked as CEO, Adlabs Digital and set up the first 90 e-cinema theatres in India. He has been in the distribution and exhibition business for 10 years.

Steve Perrin (Deputy Head of Distribution and Exhibition, UK Film Council, UK)
Steve Perrin has 24 years front line film industry experience encompassing distribution, exhibition, data gathering and analysis, research and consultancy. He was formerly Director of Marketing at Warner Bros Distributors UK, and Senior Vice President of Nielsen EDIfs International division. He joined the UK Film Council in 2001 as Head of Research but subsequently opened up the newly created Distribution and Exhibition Department with Peter Buckingham, its Head, in November 2002. He has spoken extensively on the subject of D-Cinema both in the UK and around Europe and has been developing the UK Film Councilfs D-Cinema strategy with Peter Buckingham for the majority of 2003-2005.

Mr. Bob Girard (Senior Vice President, Supervisor, Asia/Pacific, Twentieth Century Fox International)
Bob Girard began his career with Columbia Pictures International in New York in 1981 as a manager trainee. He subsequently held various joint executive positions with Columbia and Twentieth Century Fox in Latin America. He was recruited by Orion Pictures to head up their Latin American distribution in 1986. He held several key executive posts at Orion rising to VP of world-wide theatrical marketing and distribution. In 1991, he rejoined Twentieth Century Fox as Home Office rep for Japan and Korea. In 1993, he was named managing director of Hoyts/Fox/Columiba Pty Ltd, Australia. In, 1996 Mr. Girard was named VP of distribution and marketing for Latin America and Caribbean for Twentieth Century Fox . In 2001, he was tapped to head distribution for Twentieth Century Fox Asia Pacific.



SKIP CITY FORUM - VFX and Digital Cinema

French filmmaker, Pitof (Vidocq, Cat Woman), a member of the festivalfs International Competition Jury, will be joined by Shinji Higuchi, a visual effect supervisor of The Princess Blade who made his directorial debut with Lorelei: The Witch of the Pacific Ocean. The two will discuss the use of visual effects and digital technology and the contrast between French and Japanese filmmaking.

Shinji Higuchi (Director, Visual Effect Supervisor)
Born 1965, Higuchi worked as visual effect supervisor on Gamera: The Guardian of the Universe and won numerous awards. He also worked as script writer and storyboard artist for a TV animation series Evangelion as well as its theatrical version Neon Genesis Evangelion. His other credits as visual effect supervisor include Gamera 3: The Awakening of Iris, The Princess Blade, and Pistol Opera. Higuchi made a directorial debut with a Japanese box office smash hit Lorelei: The Witch of the Pacific Ocean.

Pitof (Director)
Born in 1957. As a visual effect supervisor, Pitof worked on such films as Delicatessen, directed by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, a huge box office success Les Visiteurs and Grosse Fatigue, which won him a Technical Grand Prize at Cannes Film Festival. Pitof went on to direct the first feature film to be shot in digital Vidocq and Cat Woman.
