About the SKIP CITY KINETEC International Film Festival
Where Technology and Moving Images Intersect—A New Horizon for Cinema. A Gateway to Success for Next-Generation Creators.
Since its inception in 2004, the SKIP CITY INTERNATIONAL D-Cinema FESTIVAL has served as a gateway to success for young creators, launching the careers of numerous exceptional talents. Now, amidst a period of dramatic transformation driven by the rise of diverse technologies that transcend traditional digital boundaries, the festival has been newly reborn as the SKIP CITY KINETEC International Film Festival.
The new name,"KINETEC," represents the fusion of Kinema (cinema/moving images) and Technology, as well as a Kinetic (dynamic and active) evolution. Transcending the traditional boundaries of cinema, the festival will discover and support next-generation creators who embrace change and harness cutting-edge technology—such as AI, XR (VR/AR/MR), virtual production, and vertical filmmaking—to forge entirely new forms of visual expression more powerfully than ever before.
The "Competition," which is the core of this film festival, has been revamped into two main sections: the "Cinema Category" (consisting of the Feature Length Category and the Short Length Category) for those pursuing traditional cinematic expression, and the "NEXT Category" for those breaking away from conventional concepts of film. We welcome submissions from all over the world, regardless of the country of production (both within Japan and internationally), for all categories.
SKIP CITY INTERNATIONAL D-Cinema FESTIVAL (Our Legacy)
The SKIP CITY INTERNATIONAL D-Cinema FESTIVAL anticipated the digital revolution in the global film industry early on. In 2004, amidst a paradigm shift where the industry was transitioning from celluloid film—which had lasted for over a century—to digital, the festival was born in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, as the world's first international competition film festival specializing in digital cinema (D-Cinema). Since its founding, with the goal of discovering unknown talents brought forth by the "democratization of filmmaking," the festival has held a rigorous annual competition restricted to young and emerging directors, establishing a firm reputation as a gateway to success. The unique strength of this festival lies in the fact that the talents discovered here have gone on to shape the mainstream of the modern film industry.
Discovery of International Masters
Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkey), who won the Grand Prize at our festival in 2007, later went on to win the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival (2014), becoming a legendary figure in contemporary cinema.
Rise of Alumni Directors Leading the Japanese Film Industry
The directors launched by the SKIP CITY INTERNATIONAL D-Cinema FESTIVAL now form the backbone of the Japanese film industry. The list is extensive and includes:
- ・Kazuya Shiraishi, who won the SKIP CITY Award for Lost Paradise in Tokyo and later became a top runner in the industry with hit series such as The Blood of Wolves.
- ・Ryota Nakano, who gained recognition with Capturing Dad and swept the Japan Academy Film Prizes with Her Love Boils Bathwater and The Asadas!.
- ・Shinichiro Ueda, who advanced from our Short Film category to direct One Cut of the Dead, which became a massive social phenomenon.
- ・Shinzo Katayama, who demonstrated powerful authorship through Siblings of the Cape, Missing, and globally streamed drama series.
- ・Kei Ishikawa, who began his professional career after his short film was selected for our festival, later winning the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Director for A Man and gaining high international acclaim.
Furthermore, many other rising talents have taken flight from this festival to the global stage, including Izuru Kumasaka, Mayu Nakamura, Bunji Sotoyama, Yuichiro Sakashita, Shingo Matsumura, Natsuka Kusano, Hiroshi Shoji, and Yusaku Matsumoto.
An "Industry-Nurturing" Film Festival
Utilizing the infrastructure of its venue, the SKIP CITY Sai-no-Kuni Visual Plaza, the festival has consistently maintained its stance as an "industry-nurturing film festival" by granting award winners the right to use its production facilities to support their next projects.
In 2026, while properly inheriting this illustrious 22-year legacy, the festival has updated itself to become the SKIP CITY KINETEC International Film Festival—evolving dynamically (kinetically) beyond the traditional frameworks of film to adapt to a dramatic turning point in the visual media industry driven by the rise of post-digital technologies such as AI, XR, virtual production, and vertical filmmaking.
As a premier gateway for young visual creators, this festival aims to introduce fresh talent that will breathe new life into the cinematic world, and we hope that creators filled with a challenging spirit will soar from here onto the global stage.
