“AKIRA”, which began as a serialized manga in December 1982 in “Young Magazine” (Kodansha), has gone down in manga history as a masterpiece. The globally acclaimed animated feature film AKIRA (88) was made with the original “AKIRA” creator Katsuhiro Otomo serving as director with three years and one billion yen spent on production and a liberal use of top-notch animation techniques. In July 1988, a new type of bomb was detonated in the Kanto region, inciting World War III. 31 years later, a megalopolis built in the middle of Tokyo Bay called Neo-Tokyo was slowly beginning to regain the prosperity that the old Tokyo once had, being slated to host the following year’s Olympic Games. One night in the year of 2019, a biker gang sneaks onto a closed expressway on the outskirts of Neo-Tokyo.
Director: Katsuhiro OTOMO
Born in Miyagi Prefecture in April 1954, Katsuhiro Otomo made his debut as a manga artist in 1973. Serialization of “AKIRA” began in 1982 and “Domu: A Child’s Dream” was published in 1983. While gaining popularity as a manga artist of a new era, he also worked as the character designer for the animated feature Harmagedon (83, directed by Rintaro), which was his first foray into animation production. After serving as animation director for the film production of Akira (88), he went on to create works including Memories (95), Steamboy (04) and Combustible (13, a part of the Short Peace anthology).
